Studies in the Psalms - Psalm 52

Most of us know the old saying, “He who laughs last, laughs best.” Psalm 52 is an example of this truth. The evil and wicked people of the world, who appear to be running around mocking God and completely ignoring His moral law, will one day see the folly of their lives.

Psalm 52:1-4
Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man? The steadfast love of God endures all the day. Your tongue plots destruction, like a sharp razor, you worker of deceit.  You love evil more than good, and lying more than speaking what is right. Selah  You love all words that devour, O deceitful tongue.

Social media has clearly brought to light, the work of those who speak deception and plot destruction.

Psalm 52:5
But God will break you down forever; he will snatch and tear you from your tent; he will uproot you from the land of the living. Selah

The return of Jesus will bring judgment to those who reject His free offer of salvation.

Psalm 52:6-7
The righteous shall see and fear, and shall laugh at him, saying, ”See the man who would not make God his refuge, but trusted in the abundance of his riches and sought refuge in his own destruction!”

If the righteous will see and fear, what will the unrighteous do? But the more important question for the Christian, is what will I do today?

Psalm 52:8-9
But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God. I trust in the steadfast love of God forever and ever.  I will thank you forever, because you have done it. I will wait for your name, for it is good, in the presence of the godly.

The answer is found in these three simple words; trust, thank, and wait. If we want to be like a green olive tree in the house of God, we must live by faith. We must trust in God’s steadfast love. We must thank Him forever and ever. And when it appears evil is winning, we must wait on the Lord. He is faithful.

Jesus is coming back. I don’t know when, but I know He is coming. We must remember His commandment from Luke 21:34-36

“But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap.  For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth.  But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

He’s coming back. When He does, well, the world won’t be laughing anymore. Until then, watch and pray.
