THE PSALMS – A JOURNEY IN WORSHIP AND FAITH August 15, 2014 – Day 20 - Psalm 20

Psalm 20 and tomorrow’s Psalm 21 are in the historical sense matching bookends of a prayer and praise. In them we find the people praying for their King before battle then praising God for the victory after the battle. But in the spiritual sense it also speaks to us in our day. The question of both our nation’s daily concerns and our own day to day battles comes down to this. In what or in whom will we place our trust in the day of trouble?

The answer comes within this Psalm. The prayer goes out to God as we pray for our nation. As we pray for our church. As we pray for our family.

Psalm 20:1-5
“ May the LORD answer you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob protect you!
May he send you help from the sanctuary and give you support from Zion!
May he remember all your offerings and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices! Selah
May he grant you your heart's desire and fulfill all your plans!
May we shout for joy over your salvation, and in the name of our God set up our banners! May the LORD fulfill all your petitions!

But notice the use of the word may. It denotes a prayer of confidence. The prayer doesn’t say if, it says may. We can pray with confidence that our God will answer us in the day of trouble. He will send help and support. He does remember our offerings and thus regard us with favor. He does grant us our heart’s desire and He fulfills our plans. Yes! We can shout for joy over our salvation and raise banners to our God! For we KNOW Jesus saves His anointed.
Psalm 20:6
“Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed; he will answer him from his holy heaven with the saving might of his right hand.”

What do you trust in? Your guns? Your money? Your friends? Your government? I hope not my friends.
Psalm 20:7-8
“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.
They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright.”

Praise God! Praise Jesus! In Him comes the victory, both now and in the end of the days.
Psalm 20:9
“O LORD, save the king! May he answer us when we call.”

He will.
