THE PSALMS – A JOURNEY IN WORSHIP AND FAITH - August 1, 2014 – Day 9

Some say that Psalm 9 finds David praising God for victory over Goliath and they certainly may be right. Praise is a recurring theme of the Psalms. As Christians we all face many battles and our struggle against our own sinfulness may be the greatest battle of all.
Psalm 9:1-4
“I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.
I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.
When my enemies turn back, they stumble and perish before your presence.
For you have maintained my just cause; you have sat on the throne, giving righteous judgment.”

We have an enemy who is a very formidable one. Satan does not want us to praise God. He loves to tempt and when we fall to temptation he tells us we are not good enough. He whispers to us that we aren’t even Christ’s for if we were then we wouldn’t act as we do. He can look like Goliath to us. But Christ defeated our Goliath on the cross. Satan has no power over us but what we give him.
This Psalm is also prophetic. David has given us a view of the future. Though God is sovereign, He is letting things play out in this world for a season. In 2 Corinthians 4:4 Satan is called “the god of this world” and note that in John 14:30 even Jesus called him “ruler of the world”. But understand this; Satan is only ruler of this world because God lets him be. Satan is not God of this world with a capital G but is god of this world with a little g. Satan does not do one single thing without God having allowed it to be and even then God maintains complete sovereign control over him (see the Book of Job).

Hear the prophetic words of this psalm.
Psalm 9:6-8
“The enemy came to an end in everlasting ruins; their cities you rooted out; the very memory of them has perished. But the LORD sits enthroned forever; he has established his throne for justice, and he judges the world with righteousness; he judges the peoples with uprightness.”

Psalm 9:15-17
“The nations have sunk in the pit that they made; in the net that they hid their own foot has been caught. The LORD has made himself known; he has executed judgment; the wicked are snared in the work of their own hands. Higgaion. Selah The wicked shall return to Sheol, all the nations that forget God.”
The other day I saw a posting that said the end of Christianity is near Iraq. My friends, ISIS rebels shall not prevail. Hear the very words of Jesus as he spoke to Peter in Matthew 16:18
“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

This is the future of those nations who war against God.
Psalm 9:15-16
“The nations have sunk in the pit that they made; in the net that they hid their own foot has been caught.
The LORD has made himself known; he has executed judgment; the wicked are snared in the work of their own hands. Higgaion. Selah

Psalm 9:5-6
“You have rebuked the nations; you have made the wicked perish; you have blotted out their name forever and ever. The enemy came to an end in everlasting ruins; their cities you rooted out; the very memory of them has perished.”
But until the God chooses to execute this judgment this is our hope.

Psalm 9:7-10
“But the LORD sits enthroned forever; he has established his throne for justice,
and he judges the world with righteousness; he judges the peoples with uprightness.
The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.
And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.”
Here is our instruction.

Psalm 9:11
“Sing praises to the LORD, who sits enthroned in Zion! Tell among the peoples his deeds!”
Pray this prayer.

Psalm 9:13-14
“Be gracious to me, O LORD! See my affliction from those who hate me, O you who lift me up from the gates of death, that I may recount all your praises, that in the gates of the daughter of Zion I may rejoice in your salvation.”
Rejoice today. He is coming back.
