THE PSALMS – A JOURNEY IN WORSHIP AND FAITH - November 6,2014 - Day 87 - Psalm 87

I’m proud to be an American so many people claim. I used to say that too. But as long as America continues to turn away from God I will refrain from being proud to be an American. I am thankful to be an American. It is a true blessing to live here. But we are so far from where we started it is pathetic. I could make this a rant but I will only mention one reason I am not proud of my nation; it kills its own babies. The national bird, the Eagle, is protected better than our own children. Don’t believe that? Go destroy some eagle eggs and find out the punishment. Go and have an abortion. That is your choice we say and it is legal and accepted. Psalm 87 speaks of the great city of Jerusalem and how it is God’s special city.

Psalm 87:1-3
On the holy mount stands the city he founded; the LORD loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwelling places of Jacob. Glorious things of you are spoken, O city of God. Selah

Yes, by man’s standards there are great places to be from and men are always proud of their heritage.

Psalm 87:4
Among those who know me I mention Rahab and Babylon; behold, Philistia and Tyre, with Cush — "This one was born there," they say.

But there is a greater heritage to have and that is to be born of Zion.

Psalm 87:5-6
And of Zion it shall be said, "This one and that one were born in her"; for the Most High himself will establish her. The LORD records as he registers the peoples, "This one was born there." Selah

Do you want a heritage to celebrate? It really won’t matter how great your nation was that you were born in the final judgment. What will matter is this; were you born a second time and out of the great spiritual city of Zion did you come? Jesus said this in John 3:3, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God." If we are Christians then we are no longer just Americans or Germans or even Jews. “But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior.” (Philippians 3:20).

Our hope and our heritage are in the Lord. There is no room for pride in our hearts for we did not chose God, He chose us. But to dwell in God’s Kingdom is worth celebrating.

Psalm 87:7
Singers and dancers alike say, "All my springs are in you."

Are your springs found in Christ? He is the fount of every blessing. The answer to peace will not be found in the governments of men but in Him.
