THE PSALMS – A JOURNEY IN WORSHIP AND FAITH - November 14, 2014 - Day 94 - Psalm 94

We all know that God is a god of love. Jesus loves you is the cry we hear so much today out of the church and that is absolutely the truth. But there is more to God than that. He is also holy; so holy that our minds are unable to truly understand this. Psalm 97:2 says that “righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.” Hebrews 10:31 warns that “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” Psalm 94 seems odd in its placement because it is found in the middle of seven wonderful songs that speak of the wonderful government of God. But sometimes we need a reminder that no one gets away with anything in this life. As Christians we do not need to fret over the injustices of the world; they are not getting past God’s watchful eye.

Psalm 94:1-9
O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth! Rise up, O judge of the earth; repay to the proud what they deserve! O LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked exult? They pour out their arrogant words; all the evildoers boast. They crush your people, O LORD, and afflict your heritage. They kill the widow and the sojourner, and murder the fatherless; and they say, "The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob does not perceive." Understand, O dullest of the people! Fools, when will you be wise? He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see?

God not only sees the evil deeds of man; he knows his thoughts.

Psalm 94:10-11
He who disciplines the nations, does he not rebuke? He who teaches man knowledge— the LORD—knows the thoughts of man, that they are but a breath.

Even we Christians have evil thoughts and we don’t always love others as we should. So God disciplines us and trains us into righteousness. Because of our position in Christ we are free to love the enemies of God trusting that He will handle the rest.

Psalm 94:12-15
Blessed is the man whom you discipline, O LORD, and whom you teach out of your law, to give him rest from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked. For the LORD will not forsake his people; he will not abandon his heritage; for justice will return to the righteous, and all the upright in heart will follow it.

Yes there is evil in this world but to those who are Christ’s children, He will help through the pitfalls of the world.

Psalm 94:16-19
Who rises up for me against the wicked? Who stands up for me against evildoers? If the LORD had not been my help, my soul would soon have lived in the land of silence. When I thought, "My foot slips," your steadfast love, O LORD, held me up. When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul.

We have experienced unprecedented freedom of worship in America. Our Christian brothers and sisters across this world are suffering as I type this. One day maybe we too will suffer as other Christians have and do. Take heart; God will carry us through as He does them.

Psalm 94:20-23
Can wicked rulers be allied with you, those who frame injustice by statute? They band together against the life of the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. But the LORD has become my stronghold, and my God the rock of my refuge. He will bring back on them their iniquity and wipe them out for their wickedness; the LORD our God will wipe them out.

Our job is to stay focused on the Great Commission and do whatever part God has placed on our hearts. Let God be the avenger and let God be your comfort. He’s got this.
