THE PSALMS – A JOURNEY IN WORSHIP AND FAITH - November 12, 2014 – Day 92 - Psalm 92

Last Thanksgiving I decided that I would try and make everyday Thanksgiving. No, I don’t eat turkey and pumpkin pie every day. What I try and do is wake up and be thankful to God for every single thing He blesses me with each day. I try and pray first thing upon awakening and thank Him I am alive. I try and think of new things I’ve never thanked Him for as my day goes on. I try and thank Him at the end of each day for the blessings of that particular day.  Psalm 92 is a wonderful reminder of the joy of praising God.

Psalm 92:1-3
A PSALM. A SONG FOR THE SABBATH. It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night, to the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre.

As New Testament Christians we are not bound by the law of the Sabbath. Instead we are made free by the law of the Sabbath. Most of us say we set aside Sunday as what we call our Sabbath but in reality we simply give God an hour at church of worship and then go eat lunch and watch football. Church is a good thing but we need to be praising and offering our worship to God every day.

Psalm 92:4
For you, O LORD, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I sing for joy.

God’s works are happening every day. Certainly God’s works include the creation and that is an excellent place to begin praising God about. But don’t stop there. Sing for joy at all the works of God. He is not only holding this world together, He is holding us together. Sing for joy every day.

How often we get caught up in wanting to know why God did this or that. Or why does God allow suffering and pain. The bottom line is that we simply are not able to comprehend the ways of God. That does not mean they are not good. If you were to ask a child about what he felt about the shot the doctor just gave him he would reply that it hurt and that the doctor was mean. The child fails to understand that through the pain of the injection entered the medicine that cures or the vaccine that prevents disease. When it comes to life and its suffering we are like that child.

Psalm 92:5
How great are your works, O LORD! Your thoughts are very deep!

The world is filled with so-called brilliant men. Yet they deny God’s truth and not only reject him they teach that we are fools to believe. God’s Word says the fool is not us but them.

Psalm 92:6-8
The stupid man cannot know; the fool cannot understand this: that though the wicked sprout like grass and all evildoers flourish, they are doomed to destruction forever; but you, O LORD, are on high forever.

The evil men of the world will not escape what they try and explain away.

Psalm 92:9
For behold, your enemies, O LORD, for behold, your enemies shall perish; all evildoers shall be scattered.

Though you may seem down and defeated right now God will lift you up at the right time.

Psalm 92:10-12
But you have exalted my horn like that of the wild ox; you have poured over me fresh oil. My eyes have seen the downfall of my enemies; my ears have heard the doom of my evil assailants. The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon.

Even in the midst of our trials we have an eternal hope that exceeds our wildest desires.

Psalm 92:13-15
They are planted in the house of the LORD; they flourish in the courts of our God. They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green, to declare that the LORD is upright; he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

Jesus Christ is our rock and there is no unrighteousness in Him. If you cannot think of a single good thing to praise God about today here is the greatest of all news. If you are a Christian and by faith call on the name of Jesus you are cloaked in the same righteousness. Now there is something to praise and thank God for.
