THE PSALMS – A JOURNEY IN WORSHIP AND FAITH - November 13, 2014 - Day 93 - Psalm 93

There are few things more terrifying than being on a boat in a storm. The movie A Perfect Storm illustrates this best. Though I have never been on a ship in the ocean during a storm, I have been on a pontoon boat in a lake during a storm and that was enough to scare me into wearing a life vest as we crossed the lake just hoping to get back to the dock. The Jews of the Old Testament were deathly afraid of the open sea. Psalm 93 is a short psalm on how to survive a storm.

Psalm 93:1
The LORD reigns; he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed; he has put on strength as his belt. Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.

God created this earth; He is king over all of creation. We like to think our governments rule and our armies provide. But nothing moves unless God decides it can. The winds blow at His command and they cease at His command. God is in control.

Psalm 93:2
Your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting.

God’s rule is eternal. Man’s is temporal. Guess who in the end will triumph.

Psalm 93:3
The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their roaring.

Evil, pain, and suffering are like a tidal wave about to destroy everything in its path these days. Most of us feel as if we are barely keeping our heads above water. Nothing panics us more than the feeling that we are about to drown.

Psalm 93:4
Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the LORD on high is mighty!

But the storm you are in is being controlled by God and He has the power to stop it at just the right moment.

Matthew 8:23-27
And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, "Save us, Lord; we are perishing." And he said to them, "Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?" Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men marveled, saying, "What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?"

We can trust in Christ. If you are afraid today in the midst of your storm and it seems as if Jesus is taking a nap on you then open your Bible and search out the promises of God.

Psalm 93:5
Your decrees are very trustworthy; holiness befits your house, O LORD, forevermore.

God cannot lie. His promises are true. But the storms we are in now are what will grow us into holiness. Trust Jesus. If you get scared as the waves rush over your boat and it appears you are about to drown then put on your life vest, put on Christ. Cry out to Jesus in prayer and then open His Word and know His decrees are trustworthy.
