THE PSALMS – A JOURNEY IN WORSHIP AND FAITH - October 20, 2014 - Day 72 - Psalm 72

Life’s not fair. Get used to it. That’s not fair! How many times do we hear that from our kids or grandkids? I always told my children that yes, life is simply not fair. That does not change when you grow up. At work you will see some people get away with things that you don’t. Some people will get credit you deserve. Some people will get away with speeding when you are the only one pulled over. People will lie and say false things about you. Even church people often treat each other unfairly.. Life simply isn’t fair. But there is a good reason for that. God created us to be governed by Him. But then man cried out to God that he wanted a king. So God said ok, be careful what you ask for.

1 Samuel 8:10-18
So Samuel spoke all the words of the LORD to the people who had asked of him a king. He said, "This will be the procedure of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and place them for himself in his chariots and among his horsemen and they will run before his chariots. "He will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and of fifties, and some to do his plowing and to reap his harvest and to make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. "He will also take your daughters for perfumers and cooks and bakers. "He will take the best of your fields and your vineyards and your olive groves and give them to his servants. "He will take a tenth of your seed and of your vineyards and give to his officers and to his servants. "He will also take your male servants and your female servants and your best young men and your donkeys and use them for his work. "He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his servants. "Then you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the LORD will not answer you in that day."

Life suddenly became real unfair and it has done nothing but get worse since that day.

Psalm 72 looks forward to the day Christ changes all that and resumes His true kingship.

Psalm 72:1-4
Give the king Your judgments, O God, And Your righteousness to the king's son. May he judge Your people with righteousness And Your afflicted with justice. Let the mountains bring peace to the people, And the hills, in righteousness. May he vindicate the afflicted of the people, Save the children of the needy And crush the oppressor.

Justice will one day soon return. Jesus will come down from heaven like the rain. Righteousness and peace will arrive.

Psalm 72:5-7
Let them fear You while the sun endures, And as long as the moon, throughout all generations. May he come down like rain upon the mown grass, Like showers that water the earth. In his days may the righteous flourish, And abundance of peace till the moon is no more.

Every knee will bow as the earth shall be filled with His glory.

Psalm 72:8-11
May he also rule from sea to sea And from the River to the ends of the earth. Let the nomads of the desert bow before him, And his enemies lick the dust. Let the kings of Tarshish and of the islands bring presents; The kings of Sheba and Seba offer gifts. And let all kings bow down before him, All nations serve him.

This is great news for all and especially the poor.

Psalm 72:12-15
For he will deliver the needy when he cries for help, The afflicted also, and him who has no helper. He will have compassion on the poor and needy, And the lives of the needy he will save. He will rescue their life from oppression and violence, And their blood will be precious in his sight; So may he live, and may the gold of Sheba be given to him; And let them pray for him continually; Let them bless him all day long.

There will be life in its true design by God. There shall be no hunger.

Psalm 72:16
May there be abundance of grain in the earth on top of the mountains; Its fruit will wave like the cedars of Lebanon; And may those from the city flourish like vegetation of the earth.

Jesus. Name above all names.

Psalm 72:17
May his name endure forever; May his name increase as long as the sun shines; And let men bless themselves by him; Let all nations call him blessed.

Put your trust in Jesus and place ALL your hope in Him and Him alone. Your armies, your government, nor you guns will not ever provide the peace we so desire. Just Jesus.

Psalm 72:18-19
Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, Who alone works wonders. And blessed be His glorious name forever; And may the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen, and Amen.
