THE PSALMS – A JOURNEY IN WORSHIP AND FAITH - December 22, 2014 - Day 129 - Psalm 129

Psalm 129 is the story of Israel and its persecution. For all of history Satan has wanted to destroy the Jews. Why? Simply because it is the one nation Satan does not have control of. The Jewish people are still God’s chosen nation. History is replete with the story of Israel and its enemies. Even to this day the Jewish people are at threat of their enemies. Yet God always sees to it no matter how many Jews are killed the nation survives.

Psalm 129:1-8
From my earliest youth my enemies have persecuted me. Let all Israel repeat this: From my earliest youth my enemies have persecuted me, but they have never defeated me. My back is covered with cuts, as if a farmer had plowed long furrows. But the LORD is good; he has cut me free from the ropes of the ungodly. May all who hate Jerusalem be turned back in shameful defeat. May they be as useless as grass on a rooftop, turning yellow when only half grown, ignored by the harvester, despised by the binder. And may those who pass by refuse to give them this blessing: “The LORD bless you; we bless you in the LORD’s name.”

But Jesus has a second love and that love is for His bride, the church. The church, like Israel, is always under attack. Persecution is a promise from scripture.

2 Timothy 3:12-13
Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

Things may look bleak for the church in this age as even America has begun to turn away from God. But take hope. Look back at the promises God made to Israel. Has He not kept them? If fear of the future concerns you in this day of attacks on Christians then look into your Bibles and see the promises made to the church as well. They will be kept.

Romans 8:31-39
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, "For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered." No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The answer to persecution is faith. Stand firm as a Christian but do not let Satan trick you into being filled with anger, hatred, and a desire to be violent against the enemies of God. Jesus was clear on how to handle persecution. I leave you with His words. Ask Him to give you the courage to live as He did.

Matthew 5:10-12
"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Matthew 5:44-45
But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
