Studies in Psalms - Psalm 8

The Majesty of His Name

The book of Psalms is certainly one of the favorites of many people and Psalm 8 is a wonderful expression of worship and praise to our God. Many people spend their entire lives wondering for what purpose they were created. The answer is simple but is only understood when one finally sees the truth of the scriptures through the teaching of the Holy Spirit. Man’s purpose is to bring to light, the glory of God through his worship and praise. Psalm 8 is a wonderful place to begin in worship.

Psalm 8:1
O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.

God’s glory is so great it is even above the heavens.

Psalm 8:2
Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger.

Here is a touch of messianic truth. It was from the baby Jesus born into this world, that God would provide the victory over sin and death, defeating Satan at the cross.

Psalm 8:3-4
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?

The answer?

Psalm 8:5-8
Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

God created us to rule the earth. Sadly, in the Garden of Eden, man chose sin over the glory and honor of having dominion over God’s creation. But when Jesus returns, paradise will be restored and we shall dwell in and with the glory of our God for all eternity. Until then? We worship and praise our God.

Psalm 8:9
O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

-->
Let that be our refrain. Glory be to God. Glory to Jesus, the name above all names. How majestic is your name in all the earth!
