What does it mean to say God is holy? Our typical definition
of holy is to say holiness is moral purity, free from sin and while that is
true of God, there is more to the definition than this description. At its root
level the word holy, as used in scripture, means to separate or to cut off. In
other words, when we say God is holy, we mean He is essentially unlike
everything else. But in terms of God’s holiness, we need to add another word to
the thought process and that word is transcendent. To be transcendent, is to be
above everything else. God is above everything in the entire universe in every
sense of the word.
To help understand this concept of God, we must think of Him
in relation to every other attribute in the world. God’s power is above all
power. The most powerful bomb is the world is not even close to containing the
power of God. How about justice? When the world experiences a justice system,
it finds that man’s fallen nature prevents him from having a perfect justice
system. Not so with God, His justice is true and right. What about love? God’s
love is perfect, unlike man’s, which is imperfect and fails us often.
So, when we say God is holy, we mean He is Holy. He is HOLY.
There is no one like Him.
Today as you go about your day, meditate on the Holiness of
God. As you go about your day complaining about all the little things that
irritate you, rather than dwell on those things, think of them in terms of God
and how transcendent He is above all things. Open His Word and read of His
Holiness. Ask His Holy Spirit to show you more of God and His Holiness throughout
the day. Go to Him in prayer, offering worship, praise, and thanksgiving for
His Holiness. It is has no comparison.
