We’ve all sung the great Christmas hymn Joy To The World.
Psalm 98 was the inspiration for its author Isaac Watts. There is no greater
time than Christmas to praise God but that hymn and this psalm are more than
that. Psalm 98 is a historical psalm celebrating Israel’s victory over their enemies
but to us it is a reminder of all the victories we have in Christ. When Mary first
found out she was to bear the baby Jesus she sang a song while visiting
Elizabeth who was carrying baby John the Baptist. Mary’s song is an echo of
Psalm 98.
Psalm 98:1
Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.
Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.
God loves it when we sing His praises. It is by the power of
God in which we have salvation. It is His Holy arm by which we can be saved.
Psalm 98:2-3
The LORD has made his salvation known and revealed his righteousness to the nations. He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
The LORD has made his salvation known and revealed his righteousness to the nations. He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
It is no secret that Jesus is the way to salvation. God has
shown this to the world but they refuse to see. We are to sing of the great
works he has done in our own lives so that the lost and dying world will want
to see Him.
Psalm 98:4-7
Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; make music to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing, with trumpets and the blast of the ram's horn-- shout for joy before the LORD, the King. Let the sea resound, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.
We are to praise God with music and it is right to do so
loudly. Yes there is a time for reverent, quiet time of praise but there is
nothing wrong with Sunday service worship music that blasts out the ram’s horn.
God wants to hear us and He wants it to be filled with joy.
Psalm 98:8-9
Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy; let them sing before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity.
Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy; let them sing before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity.
Even creation sings to its creator. The birds sing and the
animals chirp and bellow to God. There is no more beautiful sound that that of
rushing water as it speaks about the peace that God has brought to those who
are Christ’s. Jesus will come back and when He does the world will finally see
what true justice is. We must sing His praises and proclaim His truth so that
as many as possible will not face that judgment but they will receive the free
gift of salvation. So go out into the world singing of the great things God has
done for you. Shout for joy as you wait for Jesus to return. Worthy is the lamb
who been sacrificed for us that we might have everlasting peace with God. Sing
out today.
